Last month I visited several Tudor related places in Suffolk and Norfolk.
Framlingham Castle
Framlingham Castle in Suffolk is where Mary Tudor gathered her forces to claim her throne from Lady Jane Grey.
St Mary’s Church
St Mary’s Church in Bury St Edmund’s is the final resting place of Mary Tudor, Queen of France and Duchess
of Suffolk. Youngest sister of Henry VIII, Mary was grandmother to Lady Jane Grey.
St Michael’s Church
St Michael’s Church in Framlingham has the tombs of some of the Howards. Pictured above is the tomb of Henry, Earl of Surrey and his wife, Frances. The Earl of Surrey was executed for treason in January 1547.
Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and uncle to Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard is also buried in the church but I only discovered this after my visit.
Near the Howard tombs is the tomb of Henry VIII’s illegitimate son by Bessie Blount, Henry Fitzroy, the Duke of Richmond.
Oxburgh Hall
Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk was built in the 15th century by the Bedingfeld family. Henry VII and Elizabeth of York visited the Hall in 1487. On display are wall hangings by Mary Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick and letters from Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I.
